Lawyers blame white collar crime on gambling

Muskogee County’s legal team finds itself dealing with a growing problem: white collar crime. Embezzlement, fraud and other money crimes are at “epidemic proportions” in East Oklahoma.

Officials blame Indian Gaming.

The line of logic is simple. People want to gamble. Gambling costs money. People therefore want money. Voila. White collar crime.

Unlike most states with legalized gambling, Oklahoma does not require the “need help with your gambling addiction” section on advertisements. The trend of an ever more profitable ‘enterprise’ for the natives, gambling is a key income for the tribal governments.

What results is (another) tense relationship between the State of Oklahoma’s interests and the Tribal interests. It is only a matter of time before the state demands more money to solve the social ills caused by the native-operated vice.
